Birmingham to go live for Commonwealth Games handover

Birmingham will stage a live handover ceremony as the Commonwealth Games comes to a close on the Gold Coast this weekend.

Birmingham will stage a live handover from England's second city on Sunday during the closing ceremony for the Commonwealth Games.

The current Games are taking place on the Gold Coast in Australia but will formally come to an end on Sunday during a closing ceremony at the Carrara Stadium.

As is tradition, the host city for the next Games is given a slot during the ceremony to whet appetites for four years' time, and Birmingham is planning to mark the occasion by staging a live, choreographed routine between two continents in a Games first.

The handover segment is titled 'Go The Distance' and will feature a performance from MC Lady Sanity, singing her song of the same name, as well as a short spoken-word piece from Birmingham poet Amerah Saleh and a short film about the city from filmmaker Daniel Alexander.

"It is amazing to think that the time is finally here for Birmingham to start counting down to hosting the Games in 2022," said Jacqui Kennedy, corporate director of Place at Birmingham City Council. "I can't think of a better way to show the world what to expect from our city than this handover event.

"It has been brilliant to see how all our friends and partners in the cultural sector has come together to help show off what fabulous talent we have. I'm very excited about what we are going to be doing and the stage we've given our young artists."

The closing ceremony gets underway at 8pm local time (11am UK) on Sunday.
