Sam Burns has successfully retained the Valspar Championship with a playoff victory over Davis Riley, who missed a putt to win in regulation play.

Earlier this week, Burns performed poorly during the final round of the Players Championship, squandering an opportunity for the biggest win of his career.

However, the world number 17 got the job done this time around, shooting a final round of 69 before holing a 32-foot birdie put on the second extra hole.

While Burns will dominate the headlines, Riley's performance deserves a special mention, the world number 399 fighting back from a triple-bogey eight on the fifth to miss a 15-foot putt on the last to win his first PGA Tour event.

Justin Thomas and Matthew NeSmith finished a shot adrift in a tie for third position, with Matthew Fitzpatrick and Brian Harman in a share of fifth.

Performance of the day went to Brooks Koepka who shot a final-round 65 to move into 12th spot, and English duo Tommy Fleetwood and Luke Donald both enjoyed positive weeks by ending the tournament in 16th.
