Barcelona are reportedly open to allowing Memphis Depay to depart the club during the January transfer window.

Throughout the summer, it was widely expected that the Netherlands international would sign for a new team with just a year remaining on his contract.

However, despite Barcelona being open to a free transfer, the versatile attacker remained in Catalonia with the hope of gaining regular game time ahead of the World Cup.

Instead, the 28-year-old has been restricted to just two starts and one substitute appearance in all competitions, his last club outing coming on September 17.

Depay sustained a hamstring injury during the international break shortly after that date and he has been sidelined ever since, resulting in accusations that he has delayed a comeback ahead of the World Cup.

That led to an angry response from the Dutchman, who replied on social media: "Don't ever disrespect my professionalism".

While Depay should feature at the World Cup, he is not expected to represent Barcelona before the break in domestic action, and the playmaker may have already featured for the La Liga leaders for the last time.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, via CaughtOffside, all parties are "open" when it comes to business in January.

Romano stresses that Depay has little interest in accepting an offer from a club which does not play at the "top" level.

There are also said to be no proposals currently on the table, theoretically giving Depay a shop window at the World Cup in Qatar.

Last summer, the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus had seemingly emerged as the most likely destination for the player before a move failed to materialise.

From Barcelona's perspective, club officials will be open to further reducing their wage bill on the back of their early exit from the Champions League.

A report has indicated that Barcelona already stand to benefit financially from Gerard Pique's shock retirement, providing them with leeway to strengthen their squad in January.

Despite their demotion to the Europa League, Xavi and his squad will want to win that competition and have been drawn against Manchester United in the last 32. body check tags ::
