Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on the club-record signing of Real Sociedad forward Alexander Isak.

Although the Magpies have secured deals for Nick Pope and Sven Botman this summer, it has frequently been made clear that the club would not overstep their FFP boundaries.

However, earlier this week, the North East outfit allegedly moved to the brink of completing a £30m deal for Watford attacker Joao Pedro.

That was expected to represent Newcastle's biggest transfer during the closing days of the current transfer window, but it now appears that the club's hierarchy have made the decision to blow that deal out of the water.

According to multiple outlets, the Premier League outfit are prepared to sign Isak for a fee in the region of £60m.

David Ornstein of The Athletic has confirmed reports which emerged in Spain with Newcastle on the brink of breaking their transfer record.

El Diario Vasco says that the deal will include add-ons with Sociedad also receiving 10% of any future transfer fee for the Sweden international.

Should a transfer go through as expected, Sociedad will have processed the biggest sale in their history for a player who has spent the last three years at the club.

During that time, the 22-year-old has contributed 44 goals and eight assists from 132 appearances in all competitions.

The most recent of those strikes came on Sunday as Sociedad went down by a 4-1 scoreline at home to Barcelona in La Liga.

Given the level of finance involved in the deal, it is expected that Isak would become first choice in Newcastle's attacking ranks.

However, the situation is complicated by Callum Wilson having already netted twice this campaign and Chris Wood having only arrived for £25m in January.

If Pedro also makes the switch to Newcastle, Newcastle face the prospect of having work to do in order to balance the books before the start of September. body check tags ::
