Erik ten Hag: 'Manchester United want to create a new legacy'

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag claims that his side want to create a "legacy" following their EFL Cup final victory.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has claimed that his side want to create their "own legacy" at the club.

The Man United manager was speaking after overseeing a 2-0 victory against Newcastle United in Sunday's EFL Cup final at Wembley.

Casemiro gave the Red Devils the lead just after the half-hour mark, before Marcus Rashford doubled their advantage with a deflected strike in the 39th minute.

Although Newcastle attempted to claw their way back into the game, Man United's defence remained firm to secure the club's first trophy in six years.

Following the game, Ten Hag stated that his team want to create a legacy similar to the one left by Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Maybe it was a risk [to take this job] but I am a little bit stubborn," the United boss told Sky Sports News.

"I just love United. When I see our shirts, when I see the boundary with the fans, when I see Old Trafford, when I see the legacy Sir Alex [Ferguson] left and so many big players that were developed in United teams it makes a big impression.

"We want to do the same, this team wants to make its own history and its own legacy. When this opportunity came I thought this was the right club for me."

Man United are now unbeaten in 10 games across all competitions, and Ten Hag believes their success at Wembley demonstrates that they are on the right track.

"Silverware shows you are on a good pathway, a good direction," Ten Hag added. "It's one cup and it's February but it shows we are [going] in the right direction.

"This has to be the inspiration, the motivation to keep going on this pathway and improve. Be happy for 24 hours but not satisfied because that leads to laziness. When you become lazy you don't win any more games and you can't win trophies."

The Dutchman was asked about the potential of winning more silverware this season, with the quadruple still a possibility.

"It's an opportunity, it is possible," Ten Hag said. "This can be your inspiration but you need to believe in it.

"It is only going to come if you do the right things. If you work very hard, if you stick together then things are possible.

"But you have to go from game to game, you can't look far ahead and dream because it will distract you. The focus has to be on the job. One hundred per cent focus is necessary to get the right results."

Man United will be in action on Wednesday when they face West Ham United at Old Trafford in the fifth round of the FA Cup. body check tags ::
