Alexander Isak scored a second-half winner to guide Newcastle United to a third-round 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the EFL Cup.

Man City dominated the first half at St. James' Park, but for all of their possession, clear-cut chances proved to be few and far between.

The eight-time winners of the competition were ultimately punished for their failure to capitalise on their dominance, as Newcastle took the lead through Isak in the 53rd minute.

Although Rico Lewis fizzed an effort wide late on, Newcastle were largely untroubled in the closing stages, ensuring that they could celebrate their progression to the fourth round.

While the Magpies are hoping to replicate last season's run to the final, Manchester City will have to pick themselves from their first third-round exit since the 2012-13 campaign.

With Newcastle and Man City both balancing Champions League football with their domestic schedules, Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola took the chance to make wholesale changes for the EFL Cup meeting.

While the Magpies were in a buoyant mood following Sunday's commanding 8-0 win over Sheffield United, they were forced onto the back foot for the majority of the first period.

Oscar Bobb, who was making his first senior start for Man City, carved out the first meaningful chance when he laid the ball into the path of Julian Alvarez, whose low strike was kept out by Nick Pope's right boot.

The Argentine was presented with another opportunity just before the half-hour mark, but with the angle narrowing, he was unable to keep his shot on target.

Despite spending the majority of the first period without the ball, Newcastle went close to taking the lead in the 41st minute when Jacob Murphy raced into the box before being superbly denied by Stefan Ortega.

After being underwhelmed with Newcastle's first-half display, Howe turned to his bench at the break, introducing Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes.

The changes gave Newcastle greater impetus as they surged out of the blocks to take the lead within eight minutes of the restart.

Joelinton drove purposefully into the Man City boss, before sending the ball across the face of goal for Isak to control and tap home from close range.

In a bid to find a response, Guardiola introduced Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku in the 68th minute, before Phil Foden entered the fray six minutes later.

While Nunes saw a one-on-one opportunity taken away by Tino Livramento's last-ditch tackle, the substitutions were unable to have the desired effect.

Lewis went close to finding a leveller in the 90th minute, fizzing an effort just wide of Pope's goal in what proved to be Man City's final chance of the contest.

After suffering a disappointing EFL Cup exit, Man City will turn their attention to Saturday's Premier League meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Newcastle will aim to record a third consecutive win in all competitions when they face Burnley at St. James' Park. body check tags ::
