Leeds United beat Segunda Division side Las Palmas 1-0 at Elland Road courtesy of a late Kemar Roofe goal.

Kemar Roofe's goal four minutes from time at Elland Road has earned Leeds United a 1-0 win over Las Palmas in their final pre-season outing.

The 25-year-old attacker latched on to a corner and fired home from close range to give Marcelo Bielsa's men some momentum heading into their Championship opener against Stoke City next Sunday.

In front of 11,499 watching fans, Leeds dug deep and overcame a Las Palmas side that had claimed an emphatic 4-1 victory over Birmingham City just two days ago.

Roofe almost had United in front inside the opening quarter of the game, but he could not quite convert at full stretch following Luke Ayling's low delivery into the box.

It was proving to be a game of few chances, with the closest either side came to scoring in the first half coming via a Las Palmas free kick.

Fidel struck the crossbar with the 25-yard set piece in a let-off for the home team, who had won two, drawn two and lost one of their summer friendlies heading into this one.

Only a smart stop from Raul Fernandez prevented Leeds from edging in front early in the second period, with the visiting keeper doing well to keep out a Pablo Hernandez drive.

Hernandez would be denied once again 10 minutes from time after breaking into the box and getting a shot on target, which took a deflection on its way through.

Just when the Whites looked as though they would be left frustrated, however, Hernandez's corner was flicked into the path of Roofe by Kalvin Phillips for the game's decisive moment - the goalscorer showing good feet to tuck the ball home.
