RB Leipzig are reportedly likely to make an approach for Chelsea forward Timo Werner before the end of the summer transfer window.

Over the past 48 hours, it has been suggested that Chelsea were prepared to include Werner in any proposal for defender Nordi Mukiele.

However, with the right-sided player now on the brink of signing for Paris Saint-Germain, a part-exchange deal is now off the table unless Chelsea take an interest in another RB Leipzig player.

With Josko Gvardiol said to be on their list of potential alternatives to Jules Kounde, Chelsea may put forward a new bid to their RB Leipzig counterparts.

Nevertheless, according to the Daily Mail, the Bundesliga side remain interested in a reunion with Werner, regardless of if any offers come from the opposite direction.

While the interest in said to be "tentative", the German team recognise that there is potential to re-sign a player who they sold for in excess of £50m just two years ago.

During his four-year stay with Leipzig, Werner contributed 95 goals in all competitions, form that he has not replicated during his stint at Stamford Bridge.

Despite winning the Champions League and contributing 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 appearances, the 26-year-old is not regarded as a regular starter by head coach Thomas Tuchel.

Last week, Werner suggested that he would be happy to depart Chelsea if an opportunity arose where he could earn first-team football ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Werner said: "I could be happy everywhere. I think of course the manager always has different ideas, different thoughts and what you need in different games, I think in many games I was not in his thoughts so I try to change that.

"It is clear I want to play more and I should play more to first be in good shape for the World Cup and also, to have a chance to play at the World Cup."

In response, Tuchel stated that Werner 'must earn his game time at Chelsea', adding that he had been left 'surprised' by the player's frustrations.

On the back of Chelsea losing 4-0 to Arsenal in a friendly on Saturday night, Tuchel also hinted that he was considering making changes to the make-up of his attack.

Although the report adds that Chelsea may opt to retain the services of Werner for a further 12 months, there appears to be scope for a deal to be negotiated over the coming weeks. body check tags ::
