Martin Keown "baffled" by Arsenal's William Saliba treatment

Arsenal legend Martin Keown claims that it is "bizarre" defender William Saliba has not made an appearance for the Gunners since arriving from Saint-Etienne.

Former Arsenal centre-back Martin Keown cannot understand why teenage centre-back William Saliba has not made an appearance for the Gunners yet.

The 19-year-old is yet to pull on the red and white jersey for a competitive fixture since arriving at the Emirates in the summer, with Saliba rejoining Saint-Etienne on loan for the 2019-20 campaign before coming to North London.

The Frenchman was being tipped to go out on loan again during the final few days of the most recent transfer window but ultimately remained at the Emirates, and Keown is confused as to why Saliba has not taken to the field under Mikel Arteta.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Keown said: "It's bizarre. We've just not seen the kid. You want to see him to see how he performs say in the Championship to see if he's good enough.

"I'm anxious to see. The feeling was that this was going to be the one. Gabriel has come in and been an outstanding signing.

"Maybe they feel he's too young and want him to go out to pastures new. To then loan him out when there was a real problem there last season seems a real mystery."

Arsenal's Premier League season continues on Saturday as they face a taxing trip to Manchester City following the international break.
