Simona Halep is through to the US Open quarter-finals with a straight-sets win over Carla Suarez Navarro.

Simona Halep has registered a straight-sets win over Carla Suarez Navarro to progress through to the US Open quarter-finals.

The fifth seed is bidding to reach the final at Flushing Meadows for the first time in her career and she remains on course to achieve that feat with a 6-2 7-5 win.

Throughout the match, Halep dominated on the Suarez Navarro serve and she broke three times from 11 opportunities to take the opening set.

The Spaniard continued to struggle during the second but at 5-3 down, she managed to extend the match by breaking Halep but she immediately dropped serve for sixth time in the contest and Halep was able to serve it out at the second time of asking.

Halep will now face either Serena Williams or Yaroslava Shvedova for a place in the semi-finals.
