Having surpassed last year's Indian Wells debut, Arthur Fils aims to defeat two-time losing finalist Daniil Medvedev in Thursday's quarter-final.
The young Frenchman has needed to battle past Lorenzo Musetti and Marcos Giron to set up a second ATP Tour meeting with Medvedev, who is aiming to clinch the crown in California after falling at the last hurdle in the previous two years.
Match preview

Unlike the man he faces in the last eight, Fils has had to showcase his battling qualities to reach this stage at the BNP Paribas Open.
After defeating Canadian lucky loser Gabriel Diallo in two sets in his first match, the 20-year-old Frenchman needed three sets to beat Musetti in round three and was forced to a decider in the last 16 success over home player Giron, taking him to 8-4 for this season.
This year's last-eight run means Fils has eclipsed 2024's performance when he suffered a third-round defeat to Casper Ruud, but three wins on the trot this time have seen the two-time ATP champion improve to 5-1 at the Masters event.
Looking to improve his 83% win rate at the ATP 1000 tournament, the 20-year-old must get the better of two-time finalist Medvedev in their first match-up since the Russian dispatched a teenage Fils in Vienna two years back.
Despite his youth, the 20-year-old will back himself to demonstrate more resistance this time, having dropped serve three times and failed to muster a break point opportunity on the fifth seed's serve in 2023's encounter.

Defeating the Russian No. 1 will be far from straightforward for the effervescent Frenchman, given the 29-year-old's performance in the Californian desert in the previous two tournaments.
Medvedev's only defeats in 2023 and 2024 have been to two-time victor Carlos Alcaraz, who got the better of the 20-time ATP titlist in both title matches, and the six-time Masters 1000 champion hopes to be third-time lucky at this year's tournament.
First, the world No. 6 must overcome the threat of the battle-hardened Fils, who has spent significantly longer on court in the first week of the BNP Paribas Open.
Unlike the two-time beaten finalist, whose wins over Yunchaokete Bu and Tommy Paul were in straight sets, while Alex Michelsen lasted only 10 minutes in the third round, Fils spent two hours and 31 minutes on court against Musetti and eight minutes shy of two hours on Tuesday.
That gives the Russian star the physical advantage heading into a third consecutive quarter-final match in the desert, where he seeks to match last year's performance.
This year's run has taken Medvedev to 19-7 at Indian Wells, and the 20-time titlist seeks his 20th victory at the Masters event to advance to a third consecutive semi-final at the tournament, setting up a last-four match with Tallon Griekspoor or Holger Rune.

Head To Head
Vienna (2023) - Round of 32: Medvedev 6-4 6-2
Medvedev beat a young Fils two years back without facing a break point and exploiting three of the five chances he created on the then-teenager's deliveries for a straight-set success.
Aiming to avoid a repeat, the French player must secure his sixth top-10 triumph and fourth in the last 52 weeks following triumphs over Hubert Hurkacz, Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz.
The No. 5 seed enters Thursday's match with a 37-10 record in the last year against players ranked outside the top 20, having recently lost to Griekspoor in Dubai; Medvedev could face the Dutchman in the semi-finals if he overcomes Fils.
We say: Medvedev to win in three sets
Having seemingly solved the challenges that plagued him on serve for much of last year and earlier this season, Medvedev, who won 90.5% of points on his first serve against Bu, 75% in the win over Michelsen and 71% against Paul, should get the better of Fils in the last eight, even if the battle-hardened Frenchman could force a decider.
