Juan Martin del Potro: 'I couldn't imagine Indian Wells win'

Juan Martin del Potro says that he once found it difficult to imagine winning a Masters Series event after undergoing three wrist surgeries earlier in his career.

Juan Martin del Potro has admitted that winning a Masters Series event once seemed 'unimaginable' before winning at Indian Wells on Sunday.

Del Potro spent a number of years trying to salvage his career at the top of the sport having undergone three operations on his wrist, but the Argentine enjoyed an excellent week in California before recording a three-set victory over Roger Federer in the final.

The former US Open champion now sits at number six in the world rankings, and the 29-year-old has acknowledged that he is trying to focus on looking forward rather than dwelling on his previous setbacks.

Del Potro is quoted by The National as saying: "I couldn't imagine this moment. I mean, everybody knows I was really close to quitting tennis before my third surgery on my left wrist. I made a big effort to come back. I have everything what I want, and I want to keep improving my game to see what can I do.

"I had very bad moments a few years ago and I don't want to think about that anymore. I am just enjoying my life and playing around the world. I am exited to see what is next."

Before last week, Del Potro had not reached the final of a Masters Series event since October 2013 when losing to Novak Djokovic at the Shanghai Masters.
