Sky to return for Champions League rights?

Sky is reportedly considering a bid to poach back the rights to the Champions League from BT Sport.

Sky is reportedly considering making a bid to regain the rights to the Champions League from BT Sport.

BT poached the rights to Europe's elite club competition, plus the Europa League, from Sky in a £897m deal in 2015 and then spent a further £1.18bn on retaining the rights until 2021.

The company is under pressure from shareholders to cut the amount it spends on its sports rights portfolio, however, and is unlikely to bid a similar amount when the next set of rights come up for auction next year.

According to the Daily Mail, Sky is now weighing up the possibility of returning for both competitions in order to bolster the content available on the Sky Football channel, having recently lost the rights to La Liga, Eredivisie and the Chinese Super League to newcomer Eleven Sports.

Sky recently signed a deal with UEFA giving it exclusive UK rights to the new Nations League competition, which begins this week.
