Accrington Stanley owner told to explain 'burger bonus'

Accrington Stanley owner Andy Holt is asked by the Football League to clarify the club's 'burger bonus' policy.

The English Football League has asked Accrington Stanley owner Andy Holt to explain a bonus scheme in which he buys hamburgers for his players when they win a match.

The EFL sent the businessman a letter when the rewards scheme came to light as it is not written into the players' contracts, and is therefore considered a violation of the governing body's regulations.

"Sometimes when we win I give £200, less the £21.37 I get back in change, to get the lads McDonald's or the like. If we lose they get their own. It's just the way we roll," Holt wrote on Twitter.

"Then I receive a letter from the EFL demanding an explanation because the McDonald's is not specified in the players' contracts. You have to wonder what these folk would do with their lives if it weren't for my errors of judgement."

Speaking to Sky Sports News, an EFL spokesperson confirmed that they have contacted Holt about the matter.

"EFL regulation 61.6 requires all clubs to include full details of any payments and benefits made to its players in the Standard Player Contract," said the organisation in a statement.

"As a result of a communication made by Mr Holt in relation to the payment of additional monies, the EFL has written to Accrington Stanley and asked them for their observations.

"The club has provided its response and the matter will be considered further in due course."

Accrington are currently top of League Two with 80 points from 39 matches.
