Xander Schauffele has collected his sixth PGA Tour title by winning the Travelers Championship ahead of Sahith Theegala.

The Olympic champion had not posted success in an individual PGA Tour event for three years, but Theegala's error on the 18th hole helped hand the American a two-shot triumph.

Holding a lead at the 54-hole stage, Schauffele was the favourite to prevail in Connecticut, and he would have been relatively satisfied by coming through the first six holes at one-under-par for his round.

However, Theegala and amateur Michael Thorbjornsen were putting together eye-catching rounds in front of him, the latter looking to become the first non-professional to win a PGA Tour title.

Failing to birdie any of the final seven holes prevented the youngster from contending during the closing two hours, but it appeared that Theegala would instead get over the line for his first PGA Tour win.

Birdies on holes 15 and 17 - either side of an outstanding up-and-down par on 16 - gave him the advantage heading into the final hole before his drive found the lip of the bunker.

While an aggressive approach had worked for the rookie throughout Sunday, it did not on this occasion as he failed to get the ball out of the sand, going for the green when the sensible play was chipping back onto the fairway.

Theegala eventually saw a bogey putt lip out, leaving him with a double bogey, and Schauffele was left with three shots from 105 yards out to win the tournament.

He would require just two, the perfect approach shot leaving a three-foot putt to win, providing the Tokyo Gold medal winner with the simple task of confirming his success.

A final-round 64 saw J.T. Poston claim a share of second place with Theegala, with Chesson Hadley completing an all-Stateside top five.

World number one Scottie Scheffler finished in a share of 13th position, as did Patrick Cantlay's whose 76 saw him drop quickly out of contention.

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, arguably the form player on show this week, ended his week with a 67, seeing him secure a tie for 19th spot.
