Red Bull's Sergio Perez has qualified on pole for Sunday's Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, but the session is marred by a high-speed crash involving Mick Schumacher.

Perez topped Saturday's standings for the first time in his career, and he is joined on the front row by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who won last week's opener in Bahrain.

However, Q2 was stopped for almost an hour after Schumacher was involved in a 170mph crash at turn 12, causing severe damage to his Haas.

Remarkably, the German is said to be "physically in a good condition", and he will now be assessed as to whether he is well enough to compete on Sunday.

Before that incident, Lewis Hamilton had been eliminated in Q1 for the first time in five years, the seven-time world champion missing out by almost a 10th of a second.

While Hamilton is due to start in 16th spot, Mercedes teammate George Russell is in sixth, behind a second row which consists of Carlos Sainz Jnr and Max Verstappen. body check tags ::
