Result: Max Verstappen wins Malaysian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton claims second place

Max Verstappen claims victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton extends his Formula 1 championship lead with second place.

Max Verstappen has claimed victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton extended his Formula 1 championship lead with second place.

The Red Bull driver has endured a difficult season but was in control at the Sepang International Circuit from very early on in the race.

Verstappen, who turned 20 on Saturday, overtook Hamilton on lap four into Turn One, built a seven-second lead within 10 laps and subsequently won by 10 seconds.

The Dutchman's victory represents Red Bull's second win of the season and their second in a row at Sepang, as the Malaysian circuit bows out of F1 after 19 seasons on the calendar.

Hamilton, meanwhile, increased his world title lead by six points to 34, while Sebastian Vettel recovered from last place to fourth.

The Ferrari driver endured engine problems in qualifying to slip to the back of the grid but a spirited drive minimised the damage to his title hopes.

However, Vettel suffered a bizarre incident on the slowing-down lap, when he and Williams's Lance Stroll collided at Turn Five as the Ferrari went around the outside of the Canadian.

The German was forced to hitch a lift back to the pits with Sauber's Pascal Wehrlein, and stewards have placed the incident under investigation.
