Gareth Bale: 'Wales wanted to make statement against Republic of Ireland'

Forward Gareth Bale admits that Wales were keen to "make a statement" against Republic of Ireland after running out 4-1 victors in Cardiff.

Forward Gareth Bale has stressed that it was important for Wales to "make a statement" in Ryan Giggs's first competitive game in charge of the Dragons.

Wales suffered defeat at home to Republic of Ireland last year - a result which ultimately cost them a place in the World Cup playoffs - but Giggs's side were superb as they registered a 4-1 win over the Green Army in the UEFA Nations League.

Bale has indicated that Wales will not get carried away with the performance but acknowledged that he and his teammates were delighted with the start to their campaign.

The Real Madrid star told Sky Sports News: "We had to put a good performance in, first home game of the new regime.

"We wanted to show what we're capable of and make a statement. We're looking to win every game and win the group. The manager is trying to stamp his own style on the team. There's a lot to improve on but there's a lot to enjoy."

Wales will now travel to Denmark for the second fixture of the group on Sunday.
