Andre Villas-Boas: 'Harry Kane might have to leave Tottenham Hotspur'

Andre Villas-Boas says that Harry Kane could leave Tottenham Hotspur if he wants to win trophies.

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas has claimed that Harry Kane might have to leave the club in order to win trophies.

The 24-year-old was handed his Premier League debut under the Portuguese coach, but the pair had a disagreement over a proposal to send the forward out on loan.

Since Villas-Boas's exit in 2013, Kane has become the talisman at Tottenham, scoring over 100 top-flight goals and winning back-to-back Golden Boot awards in the past two seasons.

Rumours have been rife that Real Madrid could be sniffing around the hitman, who ended 2017 as Europe's leading scorer with 56 goals for club and country.

Villas-Boas has advised Kane to stay at the North London outfit for a few more years, but admits that the desire to win silverware could lure the England international elsewhere.

"It depends on Harry and his ambitions for the future and how he sees his career going forward," the former Chelsea coach told PA. "If he has a hunger for trophies and for notoriety he would have to leave Spurs, if he has no hunger for that, but [wants] recognition and stability, he would stay at Spurs.

"Spurs are in that breakout moment of becoming a great football team - the (new) stadium, infrastructure, training ground is there, the team is building up, very well managed.

"The trophy cabinet is still what is missing for this great club. That is in the end what footballers chase - glory, winning. I think for Harry, one or two more years at Spurs wouldn't be bad and then see how the club develops. With the new stadium coming through I also think that Spurs should have that margin from him."

Kane has scored 35 goals in all competitions this season.
