Paris Saint-Germain confirm sprained ankle for Neymar in Lille win

Paris Saint-Germain confirm that Neymar suffered a sprained ankle in Sunday's dramatic 4-3 win over Lille in Ligue 1.

Paris Saint-Germain have announced that Neymar sustained a sprained ankle in Sunday's 4-3 win over Lille in Ligue 1.

The Brazilian attacker started alongside Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi at the Parc des Princes but was tearfully forced off on a stretcher with 51 minutes played, being replaced by Hugo Ekitike.

Neymar had collided with Benjamin Andre before being withdrawn, and the 31-year-old was PSG's second casualty of the afternoon after left-back Nuno Mendes limped off in the first half.

The nature of Neymar's withdrawal immediately sparked fears of another serious injury for the ex-Barcelona man ahead of PSG's crunch showdowns with Marseille and Bayern Munich in Ligue 1 and the Champions League respectively.

PSG manager Christophe Galtier was confident that Neymar had managed to avoid any broken bones, telling Amazon Prime after the game: "It's complicated at that time, there were injuries to Nuno Mendes and Neymar. Ney, it's probably a sprained ankle, we'll assess the severity of the injury. It is being examined."

Les Parisiens subsequently released a medical update following the final whistle, confirming that the South American had indeed suffered an ankle sprain, and he will go for further assessment in the coming days.

"Neymar suffered a sprained ankle during the game against Lille and underwent an MRI scan today. It did not reveal any fracture. A new ligament assessment will be carried out in 48 hours," the update read.

With the grade of his sprain still undetermined, PSG are yet to put a timeframe on Neymar's injury, but the Brazil international is already a doubt for next Sunday's clash with Marseille in Le Classique.

Galtier's side will travel to Munich to try to overturn a 1-0 deficit in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on March 8, and it remains to be seen if Neymar will be passed fit for that contest too.

The former Santos youngster contributed a goal and assist to PSG's enthralling seven-goal win over Lille, firstly setting up Mbappe before doubling his side's lead on the 17-minute mark.

However, Bafode Diakite, Jonathan David and Jonathan Bamba exposed PSG's defensive frailties to turn the game on its head before Mbappe's second of the afternoon had seemingly rescued a point for the hosts.

The champions were awarded a free kick in the fifth minute of second-half injury time, though, and Messi stepped up to curl home the winning goal off the post to end PSG's three-game losing run.

Galtier's men remain five points clear of Marseille at the top of the table, and Neymar now boasts an eye-catching return of 18 goals and 17 assists from 29 appearances in all competitions this term.

Despite his successful exploits on the field, Neymar's activities off the pitch are still the subject of scrutiny, and speculation surrounding a possible exit from PSG this summer is starting to hot up.

As many as five Premier League clubs are believed to have been offered the chance to sign the 31-year-old, whose contract at Parc des Princes runs until 2025 with the option of a further 12 months. body check tags ::
