Newcastle United have confirmed that Bruno Guimaraes has signed a new five-year deal, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2028.

The 25-year-old joined the Magpies in January 2022 from Lyon amid a relegation battle for Eddie Howe's side, helping United to avoid the drop and finish quite a distance away from the bottom three in 2021-22.

Last season, Newcastle enjoyed a brilliant spell in the Premier League, and Guimaraes started 32 top-flight games as his side secured a fourth-placed finish and Champions League qualification.

The Brazil international has turned out on 67 occasions for the Magpies since joining from Ligue 1 nearly two years ago, making the net ripple 11 times across all competitions.

After putting pen to paper on a fresh five-year deal at St James' Park, Guimaraes spoke of his delight at committing his long-term future to a club who have thrived since a Saudi-backed takeover.

"I'm absolutely delighted. The fans have made me feel at home since my first day here and I feel so loved in my life," Guimaraes told Newcastle's official website following the announcement of his contract signing.

"I'm so happy here. It's a place that is so comfortable to be and I hope to keep making the supporters happy and helping the team do well. That's my goal, because there are no words to describe how happy I am to be here.

"I remember in my first interview, I said I wanted to play for this club in the Champions League and now it's happening. We are doing so well and when I look around the pitch at my teammates, I am so proud of them all. I'm proud of everyone; the team, the staff, the owners and the fans.

"The city believes again and it's unbelievable what we have done for the team. I hope that this can continue. It's amazing what has happened in my life in the last two years."

Guimaraes was linked with a move away from Newcastle in the summer transfer window, with the likes of Chelsea and champions Manchester City enquiring about the services of the midfielder during the off-season.

Possible moves to Stamford Bridge and the Etihad Stadium did not materialise however, and Magpies boss Howe has stated the Brazilian's importance to his plans in the North-East.

"I'm delighted to get Bruno signed and committed to the long-term future of the football club. He's such an important player and he's done so well since he joined the club," said Howe after Guimaraes new contract was announced.

"He's been a huge success since he's been here so I just hope that he can continue in that vein and carry on his success with us.

"I think he epitomises the recent success we've had. He's put in so many good displays, he's very consistent and he's got a great personality off the pitch as well.

"He cares very deeply about Newcastle United and the success of the club and he's got a great relationship with our supporters. He's been a key signing for us - definitely the type of signing that we want to make."

Guimaraes and Newcastle will be looking to make it five wins on the bounce in all competitions when they travel to East London to face West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
