Incoming Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag reportedly wants to assess Luke Shaw before it is decided whether the left-back will be offered a new long-term contract.

The 26-year-old's current deal at Old Trafford is due to expire next summer, although the club have the option to activate a one-year extension until June 2024.

According to The Sun, there have been discussions over a new £180,000-a-week contract at Man United, but the defender will be kept waiting, as Ten Hag wants to make the call on the England international's future.

The report claims that the incoming manager wants to closely monitor Shaw's form next term before deciding whether he will be a part of the long-term plans at Old Trafford.

The former Southampton youngster has struggled with a number of injury problems since arriving at Man United in 2014, and it has been another inconsistent season for the defender this term.

Shaw has contributed five assists in 27 appearances in all competitions in 2021-22, with 20 of those outings coming in the Premier League.

The left-back has spent time on the sidelines with a head injury, hamstring injury and coronavirus, though, while he has been missing since the start of April following a minor leg operation.

Shaw suffered a double leg fracture during a Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven in 2015, and two metal bolts were placed in his leg during the operation.

The defender underwent surgery to have the bolts removed, and he is expected to be back for the start of pre-season, where he will be bidding to prove himself to the team's new head coach.

There have been claims that Ten Hag is keen to sign a new left-back this term, though, with Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia linked with a switch to the club.

Shaw's injury problems have opened the door for Alex Telles to enjoy a run in the team in recent weeks, but the Brazilian has struggled defensively, with Man United dropping out of top-four contention due to their poor form over the last month.

Telles has contributed one goal and four assists in 25 appearances this season, but there have been claims that the former Porto defender could be surplus to requirements under Ten Hag.

Man United are also believed to be keen to sign a new central defender this summer, while Chelsea's N'Golo Kante is also being linked with a switch to Old Trafford.

There will also be additions in the final third of the field, with Edinson Cavani moving on, while there is uncertainty surrounding the futures of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, with Benfica's Darwin Nunez thought to be a leading target for the 20-time English champions.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have confirmed that he will be remaining at Man United this summer to play under Ten Hag during the 2022-23 campaign. body check tags ::
