Manchester United are reportedly hopeful that they can complete the signing of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona by next week.

Despite his current Barcelona contract running until 2026, De Jong has been identified by the Red Devils as their top midfield target following the departures of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard.

Although the Dutch midfielder has downplayed a move away from Camp Nou, Man United are keen to sign De Jong this summer.

According to The Mirror, the Premier League club are confident that a deal can be completed as early as next week, with the Red Devils edging closer to Barcelona's £68.8m asking price.

Once a fee has been agreed upon, De Jong is expected to decide on a five-year contract that has been proposed by United.

Since joining Barcelona in 2019, the 25-year-old has scored 12 goals in 138 appearances for the club, helping his side lift a Copa del Rey trophy in that period. body check tags ::
