Atletico Madrid reportedly hold an interest in re-signing Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Having spent five years in the Atletico academy system, Garnacho made the switch to United in 2020, initially continuing his development in the youth setup.

However, since the arrival of Erik ten Hag, the 18-year-old has been regarded as a first-team player, and the teenager has been in contention for regular starting roles.

In total, the Argentina Under-20 international has made five starts and eight substitute outings in all competitions during 2022-23, contributing two goals and three assists.

Such has been the level of his progression that he was briefly considered for a surprise call-up to Argentina's World Cup squad, only to miss out on the final 26-year-old group.

While his emergence on the scene at Old Trafford has been regarded as a positive, the prospect has just 18 months remaining on his contract, albeit with the club possessing the option to extend those terms by a further year.

United are allegedly keen to extend Garnacho's deal as soon as possible in order to ensure further clarity over his long-term future.

Nevertheless, according to Fichajes, Atletico are monitoring the situation with the view of potentially re-signing a player who they sold for just £420,000.

The La Liga club are in a position where they are expected to make considerable changes to their squad over the coming transfer windows, with Joao Felix a possible exit in the short or long term.

A lack of European football for the second half of the campaign has acted as the catalyst for such an approach to tinkering with the group, but club officials are said to have the future in mind when they consider transfer targets.

However, the report adds that Atletico are outsiders to city rivals Real Madrid in the race to try to sign Garnacho given the size of the fee that would be involved.

While it is pointed out that Atletico would wish to do everything possible to stop a Garnacho switch to the Bernabeu, it is something which appears more possible than a move to Wanda Metropolitano.

That said, United remain as favourites to hand Garnacho a new contract with a pay rise as they bid to convince the playmaker that his future is in the Premier League.
