Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has thrown his support behind Andre Onana amid suggestions that the Red Devils want to sign a new goalkeeper during this summer's transfer window.

Onana has faced a fresh round of criticism following Man United's 3-2 win over Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Wednesday night, with the Cameroonian arguably at fault for both of the away side's goals at Old Trafford.

A mix-up with Patrick Dorgu led to Jaden Philogene converting into an empty net to send Ipswich ahead, while the latter's second arrived late in the first period, when his cross curled into the bottom corner.

However, Amorim has insisted that Onana was anticipating a touch from Liam Delap, which led to him moving his feet shortly before the ball landed in the corner of his own goal.

Man United are currently being linked with a number of goalkeepers, including Atalanta BC's Juan Musso, Espanyol's Joan Garcia and Burnley's James Trafford, but Amorim has said that Onana needs support amid his recent struggles.

Man United 'considering signing a replacement for Onana'

"He did some great saves that save our team and sometimes have some problems - but that is normal. I think if you look at our team you can find a lot of players with that issue," Amorim told reporters during his press conference ahead of Sunday's FA Cup fifth-round contest with Fulham.

"People talk about the second goal from Ipswich... he is waiting for the touch of Delap. That can happen. We just have to support Andre. We need to forget about the past and prepare for the future."

Onana may have dropped down to the bench against Fulham on Sunday had number two goalkeeper Altay Bayindir been available for selection, but the Turkey international is currently on the sidelines through injury.

As a result, it is almost certain that Onana will start this weekend, with 19-year-old Elyh Harrison and 22-year-old Hubert Graczyk currently providing the back-up while Bayindir and Tom Heaton are injured.

Should Man United sign a new goalkeeper this summer?

Onana's record between the Man United sticks does not exactly inspire confidence, having conceded 132 times in his 86 appearances, keeping just 21 clean sheets in the process.

The Cameroonian has made a host of major errors since arriving from Ajax in 2023, and he has again looked shaky this season, managing only eight clean sheets in 35 appearances in all competitions.

Man United have conceded too many goals from straightforward attempts this season, and bringing in a new goalkeeper should be viewed as a priority alongside a centre-forward who is capable of being a reliable goalscorer.

There have also been suggestions that Onana is unsettled in Manchester, and if no European football is on offer next season, then he may also want to move on for the sake of his career. body check tags ::
