Wout Weghorst trained with Manchester United for the first time on Sunday, with the striker in contention to make his debut for the club against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

The Red Devils confirmed the arrival of the Netherlands international on Friday evening, having come to an agreement with Burnley over a loan deal for the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign.

Weghorst was in the stands for Saturday's Manchester derby, with the 30-year-old watching his new side come from behind to record a 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman was pictured training alongside his new teammates on Sunday, and he is expected to be involved in Wednesday's Premier League clash with Palace at Selhurst Park.

Man United are said to have paid Burnley £2.6m to loan the forward for the rest of the season, while they will also cover his wages during the loan spell.

Weghorst struggled to make his mark for Burnley in the second half of last season after arriving from Wolfsburg, only managing two goals and three assists in 20 appearances in all competitions.

However, the centre-forward scored nine goals and registered four assists in 18 appearances for Besiktas before ending his loan agreement with the Turkish outfit in order to move to Old Trafford.

Man United terminated Cristiano Ronaldo's contract at the end of November, which strengthened the club's desire to sign another forward during the January window.

Anthony Martial has recently returned to fitness, but he was substituted at the interval of the Manchester derby and has emerged as a doubt for the clash with Palace.

Weghorst's last match was on January 7, finding the back of the net in a 2-1 victory for Besiktas against Kasimpasa in the top flight of Turkish football.

Man United boss Erik ten Hag has said that he has been following Weghorst "for a long time".

"I think Wout has surprised at every club where he has been, except at Burnley, but that was only a very short period," the Dutchman told Viaplay when asked about the Netherlands international.

"I have been following him for a long time, all through his career. I have known him since he was 16 years old and everywhere he has been he has surprised.

"Yes, of course he is a player I have been scouting. He has shown at all his club that he could add something or strengthen something. He has an incredible mentality. Even defensively he can add value to a team."

Weghorst represented his country at the 2022 World Cup, famously scoring twice against Argentina in the quarter-finals of the competition to force extra-time. body check tags ::
