Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has backed Marcus Rashford to revitalise his Red Devils career during the 2022-23 campaign.

The England international has struggled to make his mark for the 20-time English champions this season, managing just five goals and two assists in 27 appearances in all competitions.

There has been a host of speculation surrounding the 24-year-old's future at Old Trafford, but he is believed to be keen to remain at the club and work under the new head coach.

Rooney has said that Man United should look to build around the likes of Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Scott McTominay, while the Derby County boss also insisted that Jesse Lingard - out of contract this summer - should be receiving more minutes for the team.

"I think, as we said, they've got good young players," Rooney told Sky Sports News. "I think [Jadon] Sancho will be better next year, Marcus will be better next year. They've got good young players.

"I think Jesse Lingard should be playing for them because he brings energy, brings quality. Scott McTominay's done well.

"So they do have some good young players, you just have to get some confidence and get them believing that they're good players and perform at the best level. And then, obviously, whoever the new manager is, I'm sure he'll bring his own players in and build that through."

Rashford was again left out of the starting XI against Leicester City on Saturday despite both Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo being unavailable for the Premier League fixture. body check tags ::
