Glazer family 'split over Manchester United sale'

The Glazer family are reportedly split over their stance on selling Manchester United after opening offers fell short of their £6bn valuation.

Back in November, the American owners announced that they would be willing to explore strategic alternatives for the club - one option of which would be a full sale.

The Glazers' announcement sparked optimism of a new era at Old Trafford following years of the family's controversial ownership, and two offers were received prior to a soft deadline of February 17.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani both submitted bids for the 20-time English champions, although neither party met the Glazers' mammoth £6bn valuation.

In recent days, it has been reported that the Glazers are now reluctant to sell Man United, and such fears grew when Avram Glazer was spotted in attendance at the EFL Cup final on Sunday.

According to Sky Sports News, both Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer are not willing to cede control of Man United, having been left 'underwhelmed' by the offers that have been tabled so far.

The duo supposedly also expected more bids to arrive prior to the February 17 deadline, but in contrast, Kevin Glazer, Edward Glazer, Darcie Glazer and Bryan Glazer would welcome a sale.

The report states that Avram and Joel believe that a £6bn asking price is fair due to Man United's global reach and opportunities for future growth, and they are not prepared to consider a full sale unless bids are upped significantly.

The uncertainty surrounding a possible takeover at Old Trafford has seen Man United's share price plummet by nearly 10%, but a separate report from AP News - via The Mirror - claims that a new offer has come in for a minority stake.

Luxembourg-based hedge fund Geneva Associates have supposedly expressed interest in buying into the club, and a minority shareholding would see the Glazers remain in control.

Since completing a full takeover of Man United in 2005, the Glazers have come under scathing criticism for saddling the club with hundreds of millions of pounds worth of debt, as well as their attempts to join the European Super League.

However, men's head coach Erik ten Hag was pleased to welcome Glazer into the dressing room at Wembley for their EFL Cup final celebrations, telling the media: "He was really happy for the club, as our owner. He wanted to be part of it. He was in the dressing room, it was good he was here. It showed his intentions.

When asked what those intentions were, Ten Hag responded: "I don't know, I'm not involved in that process but the way he is here, you feel he is committed. What he wants, that is not for me [to say]. I have to lead this team. Others in the club are involved in decisions about ownership."

Goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford propelled Man United to a 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the final of the EFL Cup, which was the Red Devils' first piece of silverware since 2017. body check tags ::
