Dermot Gallagher: 'Referee right to ignore Liverpool penalty appeals'

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher says that the referee was right to ignore Liverpool's penalty appeals against Manchester United.

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher has claimed that Liverpool did not deserve to be awarded a penalty against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

During the second half of Saturday's Premier League fixture, Liverpool wanted a spot kick for handball against Antonio Valencia and for a foul on Sadio Mane by Marouane Fellaini.

However, Gallagher has said that Craig Pawson made the correct decision in opting to wave play on in both situations.

On Valencia, Gallagher told Sky Sports News: "Someone said to me on Saturday the ball's come a long way. The ball has come a long way but his arm is very, very tight to his body.

"It's struck his arm, there's no doubt about that. But I don't think there was any intention to handle that ball."

On Fellaini, Gallagher added: "I think Mane actually goes into the back of him. I think Mane puts his leg in, he puts his leg down and I'd have been surprised if that had been given. I think they just collide."

United eventually recorded a 2-1 victory over their North-West rivals courtesy of two goals from Marcus Rashford.
