Bruno Fernandes opens up on being named Manchester United captain, with the Portuguese replacing Harry Maguire in the position last week.

Bruno Fernandes has said that it was "a beautiful moment" to be named Manchester United captain, but the attacker has insisted that the "big responsibility" will not 'change him'.

The Portugal international was officially appointed the new Man United captain last Thursday, replacing Harry Maguire, who is no longer seen as a regular starter for the club.

Fernandes often sported the captain's armband last term due to Maguire's struggles, but it has now been confirmed that he is the English side's permanent skipper.

Speaking on Friday, the midfielder said that wearing the armband is 'above his dream', with the 28-year-old "proud" to be in the position.

"Obviously, it's such a beautiful moment for me and to share it with my family, too," Fernandes told MUTV. "It's not something that you dream about, because that's above your dream. It's something that makes you feel proud of everything that we've been doing.

"It's a big responsibility, but it's already a big responsibility to be part of this club. So we know that, for me, it will be the same. I won't change.

"I will keep the same standards and just try to give my best as captain, as I was doing when I wasn't."

Fernandes was on the scoresheet in Man United's third friendly of the summer on Saturday evening, which proved to be a 2-0 victory over Premier League rivals Arsenal.

"It was a good game, I think everyone enjoyed it," Fernandes said after the clash in New Jersey. "It's always tough to play against Arsenal, it's a good game, a good fight.

"We had a great spirit, won the game, that's the most important. We are getting minutes in our legs to get in the best shape as possible for the beginning of the season.

"It's always great to score. It's always important for your confidence. It's the first game, I'm really happy. But obviously, the result was the best thing of today.

"We know how the manager is, he takes care of all the details. It's pretty tough to train with him, but this is the result.

"We have to understand that it will be tough. It's a pre-season, [there is] a lot of training, a lot of work to do. It's our second season so we have to get it better and better."

An academy side will take on Wrexham in San Diego on Tuesday evening before the first team return to action against Real Madrid on Wednesday night.
