The agent of Christian Eriksen has criticised Brentford supporters for showing 'a lack of sportsmanship' towards their former player last weekend.

At the start of the year, Brentford took the opportunity to sign Eriksen on a free transfer, the Dane being provided with his first chance of senior football since suffering a cardiac arrest in June 2021.

The playmaker's time in London was a huge success with one goal and four assists coming from his 11 appearances in the Premier League.

However, during the summer, the 30-year-old made the decision to reject a contract offer from the Bees in favour of moving to Old Trafford.

The fixture schedule dictated that Eriksen's second match in a United shirt would take place at the home of his former club, but it was not anticipated that he was facing a baptism of fire.

Instead, a number of Brentford fans jeered Eriksen with his every touch of the ball throughout what was a miserable evening for the Denmark international.

Eriksen was caught in possession for the second of Brentford's four goals as United succumbed to a 4-0 defeat, arguably one of their most humiliating losses in the Premier League era.

Martin Schoots - Eriksen's representative - has now spoken out on the boos which were heard on Saturday evening with Brentford owner Matthew Benham said to have offered a personal apology to Eriksen.

As quoted by the Daily Mail, Schoots said: "I don't think the reaction was the height of sportsmanship.

"The club did the right thing to react in this way, especially after the difference Christian made last season."

The two teams are not due to lock horns again until the end of February, with United hoping to have moved well clear of Brentford in the Premier League standings by that time.

While United have suffered successive defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, Thomas Frank's side have collected four points, the other coming from a comeback draw at Leicester City.

Brentford will face Fulham in a London derby on Saturday afternoon, while United do not return to action until meeting Liverpool on Monday night. body check tags ::
