Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has said that he has been impressed by Erik ten Hag since the Dutchman's arrival as head coach.

Ten Hag officially took charge of the Red Devils at the end of last month, leading the team in their opening pre-season training sessions at Carrington.

Man United travelled to Thailand for the first leg of their pre-season tour last Friday and opened their preparations for the new campaign with a 4-0 victory over Liverpool on Tuesday.

De Gea has said that "the whole team is working very hard" under the new manager, who is putting on "very intense sessions" in a bid to get the players ready for the new season.

"The manager knows 100% what he wants. He knows the way he wants to play. He's giving a lot of information to the team, trying to give the details and have some rules inside and outside the pitch, I think this is what we need and also to know what we have to do on the pitch and play as a team," De Gea told MUTV.

"I think the whole team is working very hard. They are very intense sessions with the manager, he knows very clearly what he wants for the team and there is a lot of information at the beginning, as I said, but with the time here [on tour] we are getting the right messages so I think it's great.

"It's very intense training and everyone is focused on football and I feel that I have seen great, great things."

De Gea is again expected to be the club's number one goalkeeper during the 2022-23 campaign, with Dean Henderson allowed to join Nottingham Forest on loan for the coming season.

Tom Heaton has now been promoted to number two stopper at Old Trafford, although the club are expected to bring in a replacement for Henderson before the end of the transfer window.

De Gea started Tuesday's pre-season friendly with Liverpool, but he is not in the squad against Melbourne Victory on Friday, with Heaton instead starting between the sticks.

The Spaniard has now been with Man United for the last 11 years, and he has said that he has developed a deep love for the club during his time at Old Trafford.

"Totally different, but with the same passion and the same feelings like when I first came here, I love the club, even more now. I love the fans too," he added.

"Now, it's like when you're a kid and you start something new – we have a new season and I feel very positive and very strong and, to be honest, I can't wait for the start of the season. It's great to be here at the club and I always feel the love of the fans."

Man United will also take on Crystal Palace and Aston Villa as part of the Australia leg of their tour, before returning to Europe for their final two pre-season friendlies against Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano.

The 20-time English champions will then open their 2022-23 Premier League campaign at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on August 7. body check tags ::
