How Manchester United could line up against Nottingham Forest

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Manchester United could line up for Wednesday's EFL Cup semi-final second leg with Nottingham Forest.

Manchester United will have to cope without Christian Eriksen for the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The Danish midfielder left the stadium on crutches after picking up an ankle problem in Saturday's FA Cup win over Reading, and he is facing at least three months on the sidelines.

Donny van de Beek and Axel Tuanzebe also remain out of contention alongside Diogo Dalot and Scott McTominay, but Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho could both make returns to the squad here.

Jack Butland failed to make Erik ten Hag's squad for the first leg and FA Cup win over Reading for unexplained reasons, so David de Gea may continue in goal, unless Tom Heaton is given a rare run-out.

Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane will likely be recalled to the backline after making the bench in the FA Cup, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka is unlikely to be rested as Dalot remains sidelined.

Should Luke Shaw recover from illness in time for Wednesday, Tyrell Malacia may cede his place at left-back to the Englishman, while Fred can expect to take Eriksen's place in the middle.

With McTominay still out of contention, Casemiro may be required to start in midfield again, unless Kobbie Mainoo does enough to force his way in.

Anthony Elanga and Alejandro Garnacho can feel confident of earning starts with their side three goals to the good, as Bruno Fernandes and Wout Weghorst complete the XI.

Manchester United possible starting lineup: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Martinez, Varane, Shaw; Casemiro, Fred; Elanga, Fernandes, Garnacho; Weghorst
