Jadon Sancho has returned to the Manchester United squad for Wednesday's EFL Cup semi-final second leg with Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are in a commanding position in the tie, having recorded a 3-0 victory when the two teams locked horns in the first leg last week.

During his pre-match press conference, Man United head coach Erik ten Hag hinted that Sancho could be back in the squad following a lengthy absence.

The England international's spot has now been confirmed, having been named on a strong bench which also includes the likes of David de Gea, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Sancho has not played for Man United since the 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League on October 22.

The former Borussia Dortmund attacker was on the bench against West Ham United on October 30, but he has now missed eight Premier League games for the Red Devils, in addition to matches in the Europa League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.

There has been confusion surrounding Sancho's absence, with the attacker placed on a personal training programme by Ten Hag during the World Cup.

Sancho has still made 14 appearances for the 20-time English champions this season, though, scoring three goals and contributing one assist in the process.

The 22-year-old has largely found it difficult to show his best form for the Red Devils since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund, only managing eight goals and four assists in 52 appearances in all competitions.

"He [Sancho] has had some really good performances [earlier in the season] and was going in a good direction. But the last weeks he struggled with illness," Ten Hag told reporters towards the end of last year.

"Then it's normal that you don't get the nomination for [the World Cup]. Every manager will take only fit players to the World Cup."

Ten Hag has selected a strong XI for the second leg with Forest, with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez returning in the middle of the defence.

Wout Weghorst will again lead the line, while there is a spot on the left of the front three for Alejandro Garnacho, with Rashford on the bench at Old Trafford.

Man United XI: Heaton; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Fred, Fernandes; Antony, Weghorst, Garnacho

Subs: De Gea, Lindelof, Maguire, Malacia, Mainoo, Pellistri, Martial, Rashford, Sancho body check tags ::
