Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan bemoans Kevin De Bruyne injury

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan hopes that Kevin De Bruyne's injury is "not too serious" and that his teammate can return to action as soon as possible.

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has bemoaned the apparent long-term loss of Kevin De Bruyne to injury.

The Citizens confirmed earlier on Wednesday that the Belgium international is to undergo a scan to determine the extent of the damage.

De Bruyne is understood to have torn the ligaments in his right knee and several reports have suggested that the 27-year-old could be out for two to four months.

"He played an incredible season [last term]," Gundogan told Sky Sports News.

"He had so much impact on our game. He was maybe the main man for us last season.

"He is very important. We all hope that it is not too serious so he can get back on the training field as soon as possible."

De Bruyne, who managed 12 goals and 21 assists in all competitions last term, missed 12 games after injuring his right knee in January 2016.
