Riyad Mahrez is to return to Manchester City early after Africa Cup of Nations holders Algeria were knocked out at the group stage following their 3-1 lost to Ivory Coast on Thursday.
After claiming just one point from their opening two Group E fixtures against Sierra Leone and Equatorial Guinea, the Foxes needed to beat Ivory Coast in their final group game to advance to the knockout stages.
However, Algeria found themselves two goals down at half time thanks to strikes from Ivory Coast midfielders Franck Kessie and Barda Ali Sanagare.
After Arsenal's Nicolas Pepe added a third for the Elephants nine minutes into the second half, Mahrez was then given the opportunity to pull one back on the hour mark after the Foxes were awarded a soft penalty, however, his effort struck the face of the post.
Algeria eventually scored their first and only goal of the tournament when Sofiane Bendebka headed home in the 73rd minute, but it was not enough to help Algeria progress to the last 16, with the two-time AFCON champions instead finishing bottom of the group.
Mahrez is now set to fly back from Cameroon, where this year's tournament is held, to Manchester and it remains to be seen when he will be next be available for Pep Guardiola's side
It is unlikely that the 30-year-old will be back in time for Saturday evening's Premier League clash away at Southampton, but the winger could be available for City's home encounter with Fulham in the FA Cup fourth round on February 5. body check tags ::
