Mohamed Salah breaks Didier Drogba Premier League record in Leeds win

Mohamed Salah sets a new record for Premier League goal contributions for an African player in Liverpool's 6-0 thrashing of Leeds United on Wednesday.

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah has broken a Premier League record set by Didier Drogba in the Reds' 6-0 thumping of Leeds United on Wednesday evening.

The Egypt international held his nerve to beat Illan Meslier twice from the spot, setting up a wonder goal from Joel Matip in between his two penalty goals at Anfield.

Salah's three contributions on the night took him up to 19 goals and 10 assists in just 24 Premier League games this term, and he has now had a direct hand in a continental record of 160 goals in the English top flight.

Drogba was the previous leader in that category for African players with 159, and Salah has now surpassed him having played 72 fewer matches than the former Chelsea talisman.

The 29-year-old has also moved above Michael Owen into third place in the Anfield Premier League goalscoring charts with 65 - four behind Steven Gerrard and 20 off record holder Robbie Fowler.

Liverpool have now closed the gap on leaders Manchester City to just three points after Wednesday's 6-0 win, during which Virgil van Dijk also equalled a Premier League unbeaten home record. body check tags ::
