Former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri has claimed that football teams mistakenly followed Pep Guardiola's philosophy for 20 years.

Allegri's sides are renowned for their defensive solidity and in five years as manager he took Juventus to two Champions League finals and five Serie A titles.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, Allegri said: "We mistakenly followed Guardiola for 20 years. Guardiola's football was not for everyone.

"You have to have [Andres] Iniesta, Xavi and [Lionel] Messi. We took a subject that related only to them as a lesson for everyone."

Allegri is now out of work after stepping down from his role at Juventus during the summer and has recently been linked with the vacant Arsenal job.

The former AC Milan manager is reportedly unlikely to take a new job at the midway stage of the season, though, and may wait until the summer before making a move.
