Huddersfield boss David Wagner has one eye on transfer market ahead of window

Huddersfield boss David Wagner admitted he has been keeping an eye on the transfer market as the January window approaches.

The Terriers invested around £40million on improving their squad in the summer after surviving their first season in the Premier League.

But they have struggled to replicate the flying start they made this time last year and will chase their second win of the season – and first on the road – at big-spending Wolves on Sunday.

"For me it isn't as easy as saying 'we haven't scored enough goals, we need another number nine, buy him, then we will be safe' because that's not how it works at our football club," Wagner said.

"Of course, I started a few weeks ago to have my eye on the market. It's important you are prepared for the window.

"But in general, everything you think about today, in six weeks' time it could be totally different.

"This is why my main focus isn't on the window, only on how we can collect the next points against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Anything else makes no sense."

Huddersfield, second from bottom in the table, have scored six times in 12 games this season – the lowest in the Premier League – but Wagner remains confident the goals will come.

"I'm happy that we are creating opportunities. I have a gut feeling we have created more opportunities than we have done in the past," he said.

"Unfortunately, and there are a lot of reasons why, not just one, we have not been able to use all of them and haven't scored enough."

Wagner added: "We will see what happens in the next six weeks and what makes sense for us.

"At the minute, it only makes sense to be focused on our opponents rather than the window."

Wagner confirmed all six of his players involved with their respective countries during the international break had returned unscathed.

But he will be forced into at least two changes at Molineux as centre-half Mathias Jorgensen sits out a one-game ban and left-back Chris Lowe is recovering from a shoulder injury.

Fellow German Erik Durm is a likely replacement for Lowe, who was carried off on a stretcher after an awkward landing during the recent home draw against West Ham.

Wagner confirmed Slovenia Under-21 international Jon Gorenc Stankovic was in contention to make his second league appearance of the season in place of Jorgensen.
