David Unsworth: 'No excuse for Everton performance at Lyon'

David Unsworth admits that Everton have "no excuse" for their performance in the 3-0 defeat to Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday night.

David Unsworth has claimed that Everton have "no excuse" for their performance in the 3-0 defeat to Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Bertrand Traore opened the scoring for the hosts in the 68th minute before substitute Houssem Aouar doubled their advantage less than 10 minutes later.

The visitors then had Morgan Schneiderlin sent off and Memphis Depay made sure of victory for Lyon with a third goal at the death, the result knocking Everton out of the competition.

As well as criticising his side's defending, Unsworth stressed that he is more concerned about getting the Toffees back on track with a result in Sunday's Premier League trip to Watford than his own chances of landing the job permanently.

"No excuse," Unsworth told reporters. "We can't defend the way we did and expect to win a game. We now have a massive game. A must win game. We can't cave in the way we do when we concede a goal. We need to rectify that very, very quickly.

"It's not about me. It's about the football club. It's about getting over this disappointing result. Sunday is a huge game for me, huge game for the club and I've left the players in no uncertain terms that it's a huge game for them."

As well as dropping out of the Europa League, Everton are battling relegation from the Premier League, currently sitting 18th in the table.
