Liverpool reportedly remain interested in securing a deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer.

The Merseyside giants have already enjoyed a productive six weeks in the transfer market, finalising deals for Fabio Carvalho, Darwin Nunez and Calvin Ramsey.

At one stage, a new central midfielder also appeared to be very much on their agenda until Jurgen Klopp insisted that he would be surprised if any more fresh faces arrived at Anfield.

Klopp claimed that he was happy with his strength-in-depth in the centre of the pitch, despite having missed out to Real Madrid in the race to sign Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid.

According to Correio da Manha, however, Liverpool have not necessarily given up in their efforts to sign a player to complement their current options.

The report claims that Liverpool are keen to enter 'formal negotiations' with Sporting regarding a potential deal for Nunes.

Throughout this summer, the Portugal international has been heavily linked with a transfer to the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea having previously been credited with an interest in his signature.

Nevertheless, talk of a move to either Molineux and Stamford Bridge has gone quiet, seemingly providing Liverpool with a clearer pathway to sign the 23-year-old.

Sporting are said to want to receive in the region of £45m should they give the green light to selling arguably their most prized asset.

Since making his senior bow in the 2019-20 campaign, Nunes has gone on to contribute seven goals and eight assists from his 99 outings in all competitions.

His performances for Sporting have led to eight caps being earned for Portugal, the player slowly cementing himself as a regular fixture on the international scene.

Nunes featured in three of Portugal's recent four games in the UEFA Nations League, albeit from the substitutes' bench on each occasion.

Although four years remain on his contract, it has been widely reported that Sporting are open to a sale for the right price.
