Newcastle United looking to end 36-year wait in Chelsea clash

Newcastle United will be looking to end their 36-year wait for a league double over Chelsea in Sunday's Premier League meeting.

Newcastle United will attempt to complete a league double over Chelsea for the first time since the 1986-87 season when they face the Blues on Sunday.

Eddie Howe's side will head to West London in celebratory mood after they secured Champions League qualification with a goalless draw against Leicester City.

The Magpies are now starting to look forward to their first group-stage appearance in the Champions League since 2003-04.

However, before they can turn their attention to the 2023-24 campaign, Newcastle will wrap up the current season with an away meeting with Chelsea.

The Magpies claimed a narrow 1-0 victory in November's home game against the Blues thanks to Joe Willock's second-half effort.

As a result of that win, Newcastle now have the opportunity to end a 36-year wait for a league double over Chelsea.

Although the two sides have experienced contrasting fortunes this season, Newcastle's recent record at Stamford Bridge suggests that claiming all three points may prove difficult.

The Magpies have won just one of their last 27 Premier League away meetings with Chelsea, and since winning 2-0 in May 2012, the visitors have lost nine consecutive top-flight matches at Stamford Bridge.

They will be able to draw confidence from the fact that they have avoided defeat in all six of their league games in London this season.

Sunday's visitors now have the chance to complete a full top-flight campaign without losing in the capital for the first time since 1996-97. body check tags ::
