Burnley defender Charlie Taylor bemoaned more sloppy goals conceded as the Clarets' struggles continued with defeat by Newcastle at Turf Moor.

Sean Dyche's side sit 17th in the Premier League table but only one point off the bottom after the 2-1 defeat made it six games without a victory.

Federico Fernandez opened the scoring in the fourth minute via a big deflection off Ben Mee and Ciaran Clark headed in a corner 19 minutes later.

Sam Vokes pulled a goal back before half-time and Burnley had several chances to equalise but also might have lost by more, with Matt Ritchie missing an open goal and Joselu hitting a post.

Left-back Taylor told Press Association Sport: "We're disappointed. It was a game we wanted to get three points from being at home and against a team that was near us. We conceded two sloppy goals really but the most frustrating thing is not getting any points.

"Obviously going one behind then two so early knocks the stuffing out of you really but we responded well initially with the goal from Vokesy but we just couldn't get the equaliser.

"We're going to have to pick ourselves up and learn from it. We set good foundations against Leicester to build on and unfortunately we didn't do that."

After conceding 13 goals in three games, Burnley found some much-needed defensive solidity in a goalless draw at Leicester prior to the international break.

But they again looked vulnerable here and Dyche was particularly unhappy with the second goal, where Burnley were slow to react to Newcastle taking a corner short and then allowed Clark a free header from Ritchie's cross.

Only Fulham have conceded more goals than Burnley, who head to Crystal Palace on Saturday and have games against Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham to come before Christmas.

"We weren't conceding those sort of goals last year but they can go either way," said Taylor. "Ben's got a touch on (the first one) and that can block or go out for a corner but unlucky for us it's gone in the top corner, then they scored again from another set-piece, which is frustrating.

"We need to get some results and get the momentum going. We've got a couple of tough fixtures coming up but we need to put it right starting on Saturday at Palace."

Dyche maintained that Burnley are heading in the right direction and insisted there will be no sense of panic around their position in the table.

He said: "The most important thing about the league table is on the last game of the season. I've been saying that for six years so I'm not trying to swerve it. The rest of it is just noise because performances are the key.

"Last season we didn't win for 11 games. The noise was only different because we were right up the table. There's not many times you see me sitting up here panicking."

Burnley's injury problems are easing, meanwhile, with Ben Gibson in the squad for the first time since August and key defender James Tarkowski potentially in contention for the clash with Palace following hernia surgery.

Winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson missed the Newcastle game with a sickness bug having recovered from a calf problem.
