Sports Mole previews Sunday's Premier League clash between Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Both Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton will be looking to bounce back from defeats when they lock horns in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The home side will enter the contest off the back of a 3-0 loss at Manchester City on Wednesday, while Southampton suffered a 2-0 defeat to Burnley on Thursday.

Match preview

Brighton would have entered Wednesday's clash with Man City full of confidence following back-to-back away victories over Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, and they made it difficult for the reigning champions in the first half of the contest in Manchester.

However, Pep Guardiola's side ultimately scored three times without reply in the second period to secure all three points, with the Seagulls losing in the league for the first time since the middle of March.

Graham Potter's team have enjoyed an impressive Premier League campaign thus far, picking up 40 points from their 33 matches to sit 10th in the table, just one point behind ninth-placed Leicester City, although the Foxes have two games spare on the side directly below them.

Brighton's home form this season has actually been incredibly disappointing, picking up just 15 points from their 16 matches in front of their own supporters, with much of their success this term built on a strong away record, which is the seventh-best in the division, superior to the likes of Manchester United and West Ham United.

The Seagulls secured a point in a goalless draw at St Mary's earlier this season, but they have only actually won one of their last 10 matches against Southampton in all competitions.

Southampton, meanwhile, will enter this match off the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Burnley on Thursday night.

The result has left the Saints in 13th position in the table, 11 points clear of the relegation zone and only two points behind ninth-placed Leicester, so they are also bidding to secure a top-half finish.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's side beat Arsenal 1-0 last weekend, but that has been their only win in the league since the end of February, losing three of their last five in England's top flight to Watford, Chelsea and Burnley.

Southampton's away form this season has been largely disappointing, picking up just 14 points from 16 matches, but they will take heart from Brighton's poor form at the Amex, while the Saints have enjoyed a lot of success against their opponents on Sunday in recent seasons.

Having finished 17th, 16th, 11th and 15th in their last four Premier League campaigns, a top-half spot would be seen as a big step in the right direction, and they will be looking to secure a strong points return from their next three games against Brighton, Crystal Palace and Brentford.

Team News

Brighton will be boosted by the return of Leandro Trossard following illness, while Steven Alzate should be available, but Jakub Moder and Shane Duffy are both still out, while Yves Bissouma will miss the contest through suspension.

Head coach Potter is unlikely to make too many changes from the side that started against Man City last time out, with a 3-5-2 formation likely to see Moises Caicedo retain his spot in midfield.

Trossard is expected to feature in a forward area, and there could also be a start for Neal Maupay, with Danny Welbeck potentially dropping down to the bench on Sunday.

As for Southampton, Alex McCarthy remains on the sidelines due to a thigh problem, but the visitors are otherwise in strong shape heading into the contest.

Saints boss Hasenhuttl is expected to resist the temptation to make wholesale changes from the side that started against Burnley, but Valentino Livramento could be introduced as the right-sided wing-back, while Che Adams is pushing for a spot in the final third of the field.

The same back three from Thursday's clash should remain in place, though, while Oriol Romeu, Stuart Armstrong and James Ward-Prowse are likely to continue in midfield.

Brighton & Hove Albion possible starting lineup:
Sanchez; Veltman, Dunk, Cucurella; Lamptey, Mwepu, Mac Allister, Caicedo, March; Trossard, Maupay

Southampton possible starting lineup:
Forster; Valery, Lyanco, Bednarek; Livramento, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, S Armstrong, Perraud; Broja, Adams

We say: Brighton & Hove Albion 1-1 Southampton

Both of these sides will be determined to bounce back from midweek defeats, but we are finding it difficult to separate them here. Brighton are in the better form, but they have only won three home Premier League matches this season, so we have had to settle on a low-scoring draw this weekend.
