Brentford have confirmed that they have signed Mikkel Damsgaard from Sampdoria for an undisclosed fee.

The Bees have been in discussions to add the playmaker to their squad for a number of days, the deal seemingly being left in doubt at one stage due to potential relegation clauses.

However, Brentford are now in a position to announce the acquisition of the Denmark international, one of the most notable in their history.

The report suggests that the 22-year-old will be available for Saturday's Premier League fixture with Manchester United, providing that he receives international clearance.

Brentford have also revealed that Damsgaard has penned a contract until the end of the 2026-27 campaign.

Speaking to the club's official website, head coach Thomas Frank said: "Mikkel is, in my opinion, another classic Brentford signing. He is a young player with big potential to develop further. We know we can help Mikkel reach his highest level, we have the staff here that have experience in doing that and we are looking forward to working with him.

"Mikkel is a player that has shown his promise at FC Nordsjaelland and Sampdoria as well as in the European Championships last summer, when he had a fantastic tournament for Denmark. He has been unlucky with injuries in the past year, but we have already seen that he is an extremely skillful player, who can run with the ball and move it well.

"We think Mikkel can play as one of our 'eights' in a 4-3-3 system or as a 'ten'. He can also play on the wing. We will use him in the way we think we can get the best out of his offensive abilities. Importantly, he is a player that will fit into our dressing room. He is a great character, he wants to work hard, he wants to work for the team, and he wants to develop."

Damsgaard departs Sampdoria having contributed just two goals and four assists from his 49 appearances in all competitions.

However, almost half of his outings in Serie A came from the substitutes' bench, partly a consequence of his fitness issues over the past two years.

Damsgaard remains highly regarded on the international scene with the last of his four goals for Denmark being a free kick against England in the Euro 2020 semi-finals.

Despite Brentford saying that the fee will remain undisclosed, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Sampdoria will receive €15m (£12.64m).

Damsgaard joins a club who came back from 2-0 down to earn a draw away at Leicester City on the opening day of the new Premier League campaign. body check tags ::
