Barcelona are reportedly determined to add a new central midfielder to their squad this summer.

The Catalan giants were strongly linked with a move for Georginio Wijnaldum, but the Netherlands international ultimately decided to join Paris Saint-Germain from Liverpool on a free transfer.

Barcelona have announced a deal for Memphis Depay, while the club are also hopeful that they will find an agreement with Lionel Messi over a new contract.

According to Marca, Ronald Koeman's priority during this summer's transfer window is to sign a new central midfielder to compete with Sergio Busquets, Pedri and Frenkie de Jong next term.

Miralem Pjanic, Carles Alena and Riqui Puig are among the other options in that area of the field, but Koeman allegedly does not trust the trio to contribute on a consistent basis.

Real Sociedad's Mikel Merino has been linked with a move to Camp Nou, although the Basque club are said to be unwilling to sell the Spaniard for anything less than his €60m (£51.5m) release clause. body check tags ::
