Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has lavished praise on his "excellent players" after the Gunners missed out on a deal to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk.

Arteta's side were believed to be leading the race to sign the attacker from Shakhtar Donetsk, having engaged in several rounds of talks with the Ukrainian giants.

However, after having two bids rejected and failing to meet Shakhtar's €100m (£88.6m) valuation, Arsenal conceded defeat to Chelsea in the race for Mudryk.

The 22-year-old was unveiled as a Blues player during their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday, having penned a seven-and-a-half year deal with the club until 2030.

Despite missing out on the signing of Mudryk, Arsenal eased to a 2-0 win over North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur later on Sunday to go eight points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

When asked about Chelsea's hijacking of Mudryk, Arteta has insisted that Arsenal will focus on deals that make sense for the club, telling the press: "We have excellent players.

"We want to improve our squad in this transfer window and when I say we, myself, the coaching staff, the staff, the players, the board, and ownership. We are all in this together, but we will do the deals that we can do and that we believe is right for the football club."

Hugo Lloris's own goal set Arsenal on their way to a convincing first win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Martin Odegaard - the Premier League's Player of the Month for November and December - scored a sublime second from outside the area.

"Terrific. Especially in the first half, I think he was incredible," Arteta said of Odegaard. "He's really showing a different kind of presence, the way he's influencing the game, just the feeling, the way he moves, what he transmits on the pitch is different and today to do what he's done here, it's a big credit to him."

Number one Aaron Ramsdale also made several vital saves as Tottenham pressed to reduce the deficit in the second half, but he was the target of a despicable fan attack after the final whistle blew.

After goading the Tottenham fans and having a brief set-to with Richarlison, Ramsdale went to collect his belongings next to the goal before being kicked by a fan who had made his way down the stands.

The supporter quickly retreated as Ramsdale and Granit Xhaka tried to confront him, leading Arteta to get involved alongside players, staff and stewards trying to control the situation.

"I haven't seen anything. What I've seen is a beautiful game of football," Arteta said when asked about the incident. "We will deal with that. There's nothing we can do right now.

"I don't want that taking any of the enjoyment or satisfaction that we have at the moment, we will deal with that tomorrow. He [Aaron] is fine yes."

Tottenham Hotspur insisted that the supporter in question would be handed a ban from the stadium, saying in a statement: "We are appalled by the behaviour of a supporter that attempted to attack Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale at the end of today's match. Violence in any form has no place in football.

"The Club has reviewed its CCTV footage to identify the supporter and will be working with the Met Police, Arsenal and Aaron Ramsdale to take the strongest possible action, including an immediate ban from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium."

Arsenal are next in action at home to Manchester United next weekend, prior to which Man City will aim to reduce the Gunners' lead back down to five points when they face Spurs on Thursday. body check tags ::
