Ray Parlour: 'Unai Emery must be given financial backing to challenge for title'

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour says that the Gunners board must back Unai Emery heavily in the transfer market if the club wants to compete for the Premier League title.

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has insisted that new coach Unai Emery will have to match Manchester City's level of financial investment should the Gunners want to compete for the Premier League title.

The former Paris Saint-Germain coach was announced as the surprise man to take over from Arsene Wenger during the week, leading Parlour to state that the Spaniard will need to be backed heavily in the transfer market to be able to reshape the club into title challengers.

"I would love him to [win the title], but I'm going to say no," Parlour told talkSPORT when asked about Arsenal going all the way under the new boss.

"I think Man City are going to get stronger and stronger, and I think Pep Guardiola is going to stick around. I can't see who's going to challenge them.

"Top four is going to be important [for Arsenal]. They've got to get back into the Champions League, so, for me, top four will be a very successful season.

"Unless there's massive investment, the same as at Man City, [they'll never win the league]. Man City will go out and buy the big players. If Pep Guardiola stays around and they keep trying to make the squad better, it's going to be very difficult."

Emery won three trophies at PSG this season and also won three consecutive Europa League crowns as Sevilla boss between 2013 and 2016.
