Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirms that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is back in London following his release from Gabon's Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has returned to the club following a post-coronavirus health scare.

The Gabon international tested positive for COVID-19 before the Africa Cup of Nations kicked off and ultimately did not play a single minute for his country at the tournament.

The Gabonese Federation claimed that medical examinations on Aubameyang had discovered "heart lesions" following his infection, but the Arsenal man and Mario Lemina were forced to deny claims made by L'Union that the reason for their departure was a behavioural incident at the hotel.

Arteta has now given an update on Aubameyang's situation, telling a press conference: "He's in London and going through some examinations because we haven't had any clarity from Gabon about why he came back.

"So it's our obligation to make sure he's safe and in good condition. So far historically with what we've done with the player that's never been an issue. Let's go step by step and make sure the player is in the best possible condition, then let's see what happens."

Aubameyang has not pulled on the red and white jersey since being stripped of the captaincy last month, with his most recent Arsenal appearance coming against Everton on December 6.
