Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: 'Jack Wilshere close to best form'

Arsene Wenger hails the performance of Jack Wilshere against BATE Borisov, admitting that he is desperate to see the Arsenal midfielder avoid any further injury setbacks.

Arsene Wenger has confessed that he is 'praying' Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere remains injury free after producing an "outstanding" display against BATE Borisov.

The 25-year-old is slowly being integrated back into the Gunners' first-team fold following a season away on loan at Bournemouth last term.

Wilshere has struggled with injury problems throughout his career to date, including at the beginning of the current campaign, but Wenger believes that the Englishman is slowly reaching peak form on the back of his string-pulling performance in the 4-2 win away at BATE.

"He had an outstanding first half and he fought until the end," he told reporters. "He is on a good way back to his best and he showed that tonight.

"He is at an age where a player usually gets to the best of his career. He has been stopped by a series of injuries. I just pray that he is not hampered anymore. He has shown tonight he has not lost his quality."

Wilshere is one of seven Arsenal players due to see their current terms expire at the Emirates Stadium come the end of the campaign.
